Hi Matt, Ive got 40 profile on my 17's and thats what Volvo recommend but I dont see why you couldnt go for 45 profile, Obviously have to check for rubbing and susspension travel etc. I dont know about 50's, I dont think these would fit, looking at the jump to 17" wheel size and higher profile in relation to original profile and 15" wheel size. Hopefully some one knows from experience. Sorry I cant be more helpful at this stage.

I believe there is no physical reason not to use the 50 aspect tyres however I think it would cause your speedo to (I can't remember which) under or over read but would certainly give a more cushioned ride
The 17in arcadia wheels come with 215/45/17's as standard, So you should be able to go from a 40 to a 45 profile without much of a problem, altho you will have to do all 4 as if you run differant size tyres on differant axles it may upset ABS as they will be running at differant speeds, The main problem or the one i've found when i went from 16's to 17's was over big bumps the rear tyres catch on the top one of the two bolts that holds the front of the rear wheel arch liner in place, i replaced both with rivits and it just about stopped it, yours been a 02 model might just have the single bolt holding it in place as they changed on later models
I've had similar problem with going from 15" to 16" wheels where both have 55 profile tyres. The bigger wheel with same profile tyre will cause the speedo to read less than your actual speed, not by much, but if you're doing an indicated 60mph, your actual speed will be around 63mph so I'd stick with the recommended profile tyre for the size wheel.
The speedo's not a problem as it can be changed by dealer depending on tyre size thats on car, According to vida (new vadis) my cars got 195/60/15's on altho don't know why cos its never had them on as it came with 16's from factory and it now has arcadias on, but anyway according to my mates GPS and my tom tom my speedo under reads my 2mph so when speedo reads 70mph am actually doing 68mph,
