Probably, but my experience is that getting a free vst chain that sounds great requires copious amounts of tweaking, not to mention that you'll have to realtime monitor your sound (which can be a problem on large projects). IMO, all the time spent with vsts is wasted when I could just get a POD and dial in a sound in a minute or less as opposed to a half-hour or more of vst-tweaking for a single sound. I think it's money well spent.
