I once thought of buying a VST ampl as well but then I found a way to get really nice tones for free using Boogex and this impulse (that I made myself). If you don't like Boogex (or if you're on a mac like I am now) you could use some tube emulator, a nice compressor and any IR processor instead. Hope that helps! Regards, - Jonas
Lokasenna, Freeamp3 has some good sounds. I hadn't thought of trying it for bass before. Jonas, that impulse sounds great for a rock bass sound with Voxengo Boogex. Thanks for that. After playing with it for a while, I still really like the Studio Devil bass VST. Pete
Yes, thanks Pete I didn't know either - I'm at mother-in-law's for a couple of days but I'll get all over this when I get back. I have the Studio Devil freebie guitar amp sim which I think is great so looking forward to this. EDIT - just blagged a very quick go with it now. Sounds very nice indeed with a pretty wide range of sounds. Mostly, though, its just very easy to use. This is for bass players after all :D
I want a bass sound like the bass on Octopuses Garden....but the vst plugins I have demoed are always far too boomy...even when you try to eq from within or without the plugin. Horribly boomy.
+1 for the Boogex/Ampeg impulse combination! Just tried it the other night after reading something Bullshark mentioned about it in another thread. Whoa! Very nice. First passed it through an instance of MajorTom. Smooth like butter, with nice punch and definition. Really surprising. Better than anything I'd gotten before from Gearbox. Kyle
FreeAmp3 works great on Bass. Try starting out with the "Ampelian" (Ampeg?) setting. Then, instead of tweaking the EQ, 1st try some of the different cabinet settings - 8X10 works great, 1X15, etc. I use a SansAmp Bass DI while tracking, and then tweak a bit with the FreeAmp 3. Great bass tone that sits well in the mix. I'm an old bass player (> 30 years), and that combo is good enough for me to quit obsessing on my bass sound, and move on to the inevitable other things that now sound worse in my recordings.
