of you have a decent interface with low latency and a good hiz input, you can get a good signal chain for free. i have a pod x3 live and its WONDERFUL for live stuff, and i REALLY like the pod farm plugins... there are some things a pod can do that others still cant.
I have the bottom end Toneport GX(Older version) with the Standalone GB/PF and if it broke now I'd go and buy another or another Line6 input device ASAP. I use it for Guitar/Bass and vocals.Fantastic value and sounds IMHO if you are on a budget. Check my sig as all the stuff on there has been done through the GX.
I use the POD X3 and the tones are fabulous in there. Software emulation can't compare. And as someone mentioned you will spend more time installing and setting up and tweaking. You can dial up great sounds using a POD in less time. Many people think the POD sucks and you can't really use it for serious recording. They couldn't be more wrong.
not sure if price is a factor here, if it is you can disregard this. I have amplitube 2, and a POD XT PRo, used the POD for years and did well with it but was never totally satisfied with it, even after tons of tweaks. especially when layering alot of distorted electric tracks i recently purchased the Fractal Audio Axe FX, and it is by far the best direct sound i have ever gotten with an electric guitar the effects, tweakability and sounds are just way beyond what i ever was abel to get with the POD, and don't get me wrong i really liked my POD for how easy it was to use and how relatively close ic ould get going direct being just a home studio guy i can't mic an amp, due to little ones etc i almost pulled the trigger on an X3 pro, but am really glad i didn't some direct sounds ac/dc rhythm was one of the hardest for me on the pod, these are pretty good examples of that sound you can browse thru the "recordings" section of their forum and listen to everything from heavy metal to jazz and blues
ah, I guess I should have specified that this is for "hardcore" music (he would object to me calling it hardcore, and that it's "happy core" or "pirana core" or something core) with super heavily distorted guitars. Great info, thanks everyone!
im using a podxt for some pretty heavy stuff.. heres some examples its pod direct - 2 layers each side for rythms (on the 1st 2 songs) Im really not meaning to plug my projects but I havent heard too many examples of metal with the pod to use to get an idea of what is possible. I know its myspace but the player is streaming from stashbox
