As a new member I am so glad to be here. I currently use a very expensive DAW that is driving me broke and mad . Question: I would like to mix down to 5.1 or even 7.1 surround. Surely, Reaper alone cannot do this. Don't I have to buy SurCode for this purpose ? Does Reaper work with SurCode ? Thanks for anything anyone can say on this.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but you might want to check SpatReap plugin in here: It's "donationware". And the tutorial on how to use it with Reaper: Fergo
I thank you for what looks like an answer from heaven. The author of this software asks for a modest donation. I used to write software. His efforts are certainly deserving of more than he asks. Thank you very much.
i think those are just mixing tools...panners and the like that will help with the creation of multichannel files which can then be encoded. it sounds like you need that, as well as an actual encoder. i think you might want to check out besweet on that page. otherwise, if you know anybody with a mac/logic studio, that comes with compressor, which can also encode dolby ac3 files, as well as flag wav files for prologic decoding. kell
quicktime can also be multichannel. for a long time on pc, afaik the minetonka stuff was the only game in town. it's nice some freebies have come along. something i'd love to see are encode/decode plugs you can put on your master section, allowing you to monitor the mix with the encoding/decoding process being accounted for. directly exporting the mix to an ac3 would be killer too :) nuendo can (at least it could) do this for prologic (matrixed encoding from a stereo source...poor man's surround), which was cool, because PL files are just normal stereo wavs that are flagged for automatic PL decode (if your tuner allows it), and it was pretty vital to hear how the encoder handled different panning, etc. kell

Expanding on what jm duchenne eluded to. Most delivery requirements for surround are going to be discreet uncompressed audio files (L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs...etc.) and Reaper with Acousmodules is perfectly capable of that. Often one might also be asked for LtRt (left total right total) which can be derived directly from the surround mix using bussing or created using a dolby or other brand downmix product. The AC3 and DTS encoding is not usually done by the mix studio but if necessary you can use some of the products listed above to do so.
