that is the next thing on my list to do of attempts to remedy this problem. How can the free space be reported wrong??? Is that even possible? Is it more likely that my free space could be reported wrong IF i had 50 gigs of movies on my desktop? (which i do)- What if i do the scandisk and nothing comes up wrong. what would you reccomend next? Thanks for any suggestions or ideas on this problem- i am totaly stumped
the errors you say sound like a problem with free space (or lack of), or a physical problem with the drive or controller. but usually the programs give nice errors when out of disk space, so the scandisk thing is a harmless 'idea' that may fix the problem, and this post is just clutching at straws late at night ;) Enf...
i just wanted to report that it was indeed a space problem. I have no idea my computer was not reporting the correct amount of free space. i did a scan disk, and then afterwrds it reported the correct amount of free space, which was 1 gig. thats why nothing would finish- enf, thanks for your help and advice.
When you delete a file in Windows, it sends it to the "Recycle Bin", and reports the space used by the file as now "free". However, it is not truly free until it is deleted from the recyle bin, because the operating system holds that space as reserved. This is why you should routinely examine the contents of the RB and delete the unwanted stuff. With videos, the "phantom free space" can really add up.
