you can do that for free with VirtualDub: and there's plenty of free video editors here: have fun!

Never had any luck with the freebies. Do yourself a favor and get Sony Vegas Studio. Less than $50 (I frequently call it the 'Reaper of Video') and is a dead easy, no fail way to edit video.

Never used it myself but apparantly the screencapture with this very smooth.
