Splitting cambelt

Following on from the cambelts topics, has anyone used the stanley blade method to change their belt on any engine. Split the belt length ways so you have 2 halves, remove outer (away from the block) half, slide new belt on as far as possible, cut off rest of old belt then slide new belt fully on. Never tried it myself, just curious to see if any one here has been brave enough.

Never heard of this technique before. Certainly would make sure the pulleys lined up.

sounds pretty good idea, would be tricky cutting into the teeth on the belt that are in the grooves of the pulleys and crank as turning the crank will be hard work to get round it

I've heard of it, saw it mentioned in Car Mechanics Mag a few years ago, never tried it though.

It might be ok on a very complex engine with lots of pulleys to line up but hardly worth the time , effort and cut fingers as the job is so easy anyway with well marked pulleys ..

Fiendishly clever!You'd probably be able to split the belt by rotating the crank as you slice-thereby getting past the problem of getting into these tight spaces and pulleys.Nice one-I wonder if they do that at the stealer!:cow4:

I can't take any credit for this, I think I seen it in Car Mechanics a while ago as well.
