While watching the Alpha 6 installation I'm pretty sure that I saw a reference to C:\WINDOWS\system32 scroll by. It does not appear in the Details log. Was I right? If so, what changes does the installation process make to System32?
c:\WINDOWS\system32\config\software.LOG Old date: 12/15/2008 7:10 PM New date: 12/15/2008 7:12 PM Old size: 1,024 bytes New size: 1,024 bytes c:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system.LOG Old date: 12/15/2008 7:11 PM New date: 12/15/2008 7:12 PM Old size: 16,384 bytes New size: 1,024 bytes Those are what you are seeing i think NAS
software.log and system.log are registry files and you can`t open them directly, except with regedit.exe Every time you start an .exe or any other executable file it is logged by the OS and the reference to it put in the registry under "MUI Reference". MUI reference is some kind of a list of executables that are safe to run. Logging to registry happens when the OS asks you to run the executable or not and you say "run". It`s called the Data Execution Prevention - DEP, and supposedly protects the OS from viruses... as long as you don`t press "run" when starting an infected file, of course. So it`s nothing abnormal, don`t worry :). Cheers!
