Are partitions important

Do you defintley need to partition your hard drive and why. Also how big/small should they be? Thanks, Jag

You should partition your drive if it's larger than 9 gigs. An 18 gig drive should become at least 2 9 gig partitions. It improves the seek performance of the drive thus making it easier to playback all the little audio edits ect. The other thing to remember is that when you record you should only record to 1 of the partitions. Remember, it's still only 1 drive and if you record to multiple partitions of a single drive you will slow down the seek performance which in pro tools will show up as 9073 errors. Not to cloud the waters too much, but... I record mostly live performances, some of which are hours long, so I haven't partitioned my drive (27GB Maxtor in G4 400, formatted HFS+). I haven't seen any -9073 errors. I'm sure that what B Carter says is true, but apparently you can break the 9GB rule and get away with it in some cases. Jeff D.
